Fatal Stabbing at East Street Market: One Dead, Two Injured in South London IncidentFatal Stabbing at East Street Market: One Dead, Two Injured in South London Incident
London, SE17London, SE17— A tragic incident unfolded at the bustling East Street Market in Walworth, South London, on Sunday morning as three individuals were stabbed, resulting in one fatality.
Metropolitan Police were called to the scene at approximately 10:40 AM following reports of multiple stabbings in the area. Officers, alongside paramedics, attended to three injured individuals, but despite the immediate medical intervention, one male victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are in the process of confirming the identity of the deceased and notifying next of kin.
A suspect, described as a man in his 60s, was apprehended on-site. He remains in police custody. Commander Peter Stevens of the Metropolitan Police confirmed that the swift arrest was made by officers responding promptly to the incident.
“Our investigation is at a very early stage,” Commander Stevens stated. “One man was rapidly arrested by officers at the scene. At present, although enquiries are ongoing, nobody else is sought. The incident is not being treated as terrorism. Dedicated detectives from Specialist Crime are leading the ongoing enquiries.”
The market scene, usually vibrant with shoppers on a Sunday morning, quickly turned chaotic as witnesses described the swift and heroic actions of traders who subdued the alleged attacker. Wasim Hussain, a shop worker in the area, recounted, “They just put him down and waited for the police. It was the general public — most of them work in the market.”
Another market worker who witnessed the incident added, “I was working here when I saw a person coming down the road with a knife. It makes me scared working in the area; nothing like this has happened before.”
A bystander remarked on the shock experienced by regular visitors of the market, “When I arrived, the cordon was already in place, and everyone, including my partner and me, couldn’t believe what had happened. It’s a very busy market, especially on weekends. I know stabbings happen every day in London, but experiencing it close to home is frightening.”
The Metropolitan Police have launched an appeal for witnesses and anyone with relevant footage of the incident to come forward. “I want to thank those people who have already shared their accounts of what they saw with police,” Commander Stevens stated.
“I urge anyone with information or footage, or any witnesses yet to speak with police, to get in touch.”“I urge anyone with information or footage, or any witnesses yet to speak with police, to get in touch.”

The two surviving victims, a man and a woman, were transported to a nearby hospital. Police are awaiting an assessment of their conditions. The investigation, still in its early stages, is being handled by detectives from Specialist Crime, with no further suspects currently being sought.
Commander StevensCommander Stevensextended his condolences to those affected, saying, “Tragically, a man lost his life this morning, and officers are working hard to establish exactly what happened and to provide support to his family. My thoughts and sincere sympathies are with them, and with the other people injured.”
The East Street Market remains cordoned off as forensic teams continue their work, gathering evidence from the scene of the incident.
This fatal stabbing adds to a series of violent incidents in London markets, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety and the need for community vigilance.
