Two men have been convicted of murder following a brutal stabbing that stemmed from an argument over an electric bike in north-west London. Abbas Jean-Pierre, 20, from Northolt, and Shakur Idan, 21, from Harrow, were found guilty at the Old Bailey for the killing of 20-year-old Hamed Mani on 9 August in Harrow.
The trial revealed that the altercation began when Idan approached Mr. Mani and his friends in St George’s Shopping Centre, Harrow-on-the-Hill, riding his electric bike. Prosecutor Caroline Carberry KC described how a tussle quickly ensued between Idan and Mr. Mani, involving others from Mr. Mani’s group.
Although no injuries were reported initially, Idan’s electric bike was taken by one of Mr. Mani’s friends, and another member of the group brandished a lock knife. Despite being alone, Idan pursued the group as they fled, opting not to contact the police. Instead, he called for backup, summoning his friend Jean-Pierre, who arrived armed with a machete in a sheath and a Rambo-style knife.
As the confrontation escalated, Idan ran towards Mr. Mani’s group, shouting to Jean-Pierre, “wet him up,” a street slang term for stabbing. While the rest of the group scattered, Mr. Mani was cornered by Jean-Pierre in a small open garage. Despite having a knife, Mr. Mani was outnumbered and outarmed, attempting to flee down the road.
Ms. Carberry narrated how Mr. Mani was eventually overpowered and, while lying on the pavement, was repeatedly stabbed by Jean-Pierre with one of the large knives. The prosecutor condemned the attack as a cold-blooded murder by two young men who showed no hesitation in using lethal violence.
Mr. Mani suffered 11 stab wounds and died at the scene. Both defendants denied murder, claiming self-defense, but were ultimately convicted after the jury deliberated for 16 hours. They have been remanded into custody and are scheduled to be sentenced on 19 July.
